Cleveland, Ohio: A City in Transition

Downtown Cleveland Cleveland, Ohio is located on the southern shore of Lake Erie along the banks of the Cuyahoga River not far from the border between Ohio and Pennsylvania. The current population is around 438,000 and is currently declining.

Historically, Cleveland, OH has been a center for industry due to its location at the hub of the rail and canal networks. Heavy manufacturing was the city's stock in trade for many years until the global decline in heavy industry in the 1980s and 1990s. After that time Cleveland, like many other cities in similar situations, was forced to diversify its economy. It has done so with some success and today is reliant not solely on manufacturing but also derives part of its economy from the services industry, finance, insurance and health care. It is currently home to the corporate headquarters of American Greetings, Sherwin-Williams, and Progressive Auto Insurance, among others, though the list is declining with the recent trend of mergers and acquisitions.

While industry is on the decline, culture is on its way up. Restaurants and culinary endeavors have long been a driving force in the Cleveland, Ohio cultural scene thanks to the contributions of Polish, Italian, Irish and Eastern European immigrants. Local chefs Michael Ruhlman and Hector Boiardi (of Chef Boyardee fame) have made great contributions toward turning Cleveland into what the Chicago Tribune has called "America's Hot New Dining City." In recent years local Cleveland chef Michael Symon was the winner of the "Next Iron Chef" reality TV show and Anthony Bourdain highlighted Cleveland on his culinary travel show "No Reservations."
